The Snots aka Acute Respiratory Syndrome
The severe group of symptoms that is killing alpacas is called Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). This does not mean that the virus has been named. It has not been isolated yet. The name represents a group of symptoms where lung failure occurs. Alpacas that experience the milder form of the virus have Acute Respiratory Syndrome. Once again, this is NOT the name of the virus, but the name for the group of symptoms the virus most often displays.
I will now refer to the mild range of symptoms as ARS, and the more severe cases ARDS. Simply said ARS is the medically accurate way of saying they have a snotty nose, sneezing and coughing. ARDS describes the most severe cases that result in lung failure and often death. Yes, confusing, but it is better than the Snots.
I encourage the alpaca community to come together in seeking a elucidation to ARS. Please remember: “No one person can do everything, but everyone can do something.” Together we can effect change in the future and health of the American Alpaca herd. Please join us!
