Coronavirus

There have been a number of people reporting alpacas with Coronavirus, as well as, some deaths. They main symptom is diarrhea. A test ran on a stool sample will verify if the alpaca has Coronavirus. The effective treatment is to simply treat the symptoms. It is important to keep a close eye on your alpacas, so you immediately notice if they have diarrhea. This virus is very easily transmitted, so isolation is not very effective.

Alpacas that are most susceptible to Coronavirus are young or compromised. This may mean that they are older, pregnant, nursing, or stressed.

To treat the symptoms you must rehydration the alpaca, and keep them well hydrated until the Coronavirus runs its course. It is important to replace the Potassium that they are losing. First, hopefully you have on hand a good electrolyte treatment. Here are a few suggestions: Re-Sorb, Deliver, Electro Dex. In an emergency you can give Gatorade.

Dr. Steven Hull emphasized, “Do NOT give grain or pellets”, while they have any symptoms! If you can find a good leafy alfalfa this is good to feed them. He clarified NOT to feed alfalfa pellets.

I would like to thank Dr. Steve Hull for his on going support of Alpaca Watch.
